Chitradurga Fort

The paramount attraction in Chitradurga is undeniably the Chitradurga Fort, a cornerstone of Karnataka’s historical heritage. Constructed between the 11th and 13th centuries under the reign of various regional rulers, this monumental fortress occupies a strategic position within the valley carved by the Vedavati River. Spanning numerous hills and a commanding peak, it offers breathtaking vistas of the surrounding Chitradurga district and its villages.

Accessible daily from 6 AM to 5 PM, visitors can explore this architectural marvel for a nominal entrance fee of INR 20 per person.

Chandravalli Archaeological Site

An often-overlooked gem in Chitradurga is the Chandravalli archaeological site, approximately 3 kilometres away. Here, amidst serene surroundings, lies a picturesque lake and a cave with intriguing historical significance. The cave served as a sanctuary for saints from Belgaum seeking solitude for meditation.

Open daily from 9 AM to 5 PM; visitors can explore this tranquil site without any entrance fee, making it accessible to all who wish to delve into its rich history and natural beauty.

Ancient Temples

Chitradurga boasts a plethora of ancient temples steeped in history, some dating back thousands of years. These architectural marvels showcase intricate details that leave visitors awe-inspired.

The Sri Uchangi Devi Temple stands among these temples, located on Fort Road. Constructed during the Nayaka period, it follows the illustrious Vijayanagara architecture style, reflecting its era’s grandeur.

Jogimatti

Jogimatti, a serene hill station and forest reserve approximately 10 kilometres from Chitradurga city, offers a refreshing retreat amidst nature’s bounty. Rising to an impressive elevation of 3803 feet, it claims the title of the highest point in the Chitradurga district.

Visitors are welcome to explore Jogimatti’s pristine beauty and lush landscapes exclusively during the cooler and more pleasant months, from May to December.

Adu Malleshwara Zoo

Adjacent to Jogimatti lies the Adu Malleshwara Zoo, housing various birds and animals within spacious enclosures. However, given Chitradurga’s scorching and arid climate, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of sadness for the inhabitants.

I would not recommend visiting this zoo due to the harsh conditions the animals and birds endure. Operating hours are from 6 AM to 6 PM daily, with an entrance fee of INR 40 per person.
