Story Behind Adi Chunchanagiri

Legend has it that Adi Rudra entrusted this region to Siddhi Yogi, who went on to establish the Siddha Simhasana and the Math. In 2013, Sri Nirmalanandanath Swamiji assumed the position of 72nd head of Math.

According to a mythological tale, Lord Shiva engaged in a fierce battle with and vanquished two demons, Chuncha and Kancha, at this very location. Subsequently, Lord Shiva bestowed the land upon Siddhi Yogi, who founded the Siddha Simhasana and the Math. Guided by Lord Shiva, Siddhi Yogi was entrusted with propagating righteousness within society.

Things To See in Adi Chunchanagiri

Climb to the Main Temple

For an avid hiker and trekking enthusiast like myself, the temple provided an excellent opportunity for some physical activity. Ascending the approximately 200 steps to the main temple was a rewarding weekend workout. The climb is not strenuous, and it’s expected to witness numerous devotees effortlessly making their way up.

Beyond the main temple, one can ascend even higher towards the peak. At the summit, a striking statue of Nandi and a modest cave temple await exploration. An intriguing belief surrounds a small, weighty statue of Nandi within the cave temple. It is said that lifting this statue determines whether a devotee’s wish will be granted. If a devotee successfully lifts the 2 to 3-kilogram statue, their wish is believed to come true. On the other hand, if lifting proves challenging, the devotee must patiently await the fulfilment of their desire.

Visit Sri Kalabhairaveshwara Swamy Temple

The sole temple dedicated to Kalabhairaveshwara, also known as Lord Gangadhareshwara, in South India is located at Adi Chunchanagiri. This ancient temple, dating back approximately 2000 years, is one of India’s oldest. Operating hours extend from 6 AM to 9 PM, and visitors are welcomed without any entrance fee.

The temple tends to be bustling, particularly near the main deity. When capturing photographs, it is advisable to seek permission from the priests. As a courtesy, I approached the prominent priest for approval before capturing the image below.

Observing appropriate attire is crucial; refrain from wearing shorts or revealing clothing to show respect for the cultural and traditional norms. In addition, maintain cleanliness by carrying your waste or disposing of it in the conveniently placed dustbins scattered around the temple premises.
