How to Get to Ashtamudi?

By Road

The journey from Bangalore to Ashtamudi spans approximately 680 kilometres, requiring a drive of roughly 13 hours and 30 minutes. The route includes sections with toll roads.

By Air

The closest airport to Ashtamudi is in Trivandrum, merely 70 kilometres away, with a manageable travel time of approximately 2 hours. For budget-friendly travel options, consider Indigo and SpiceJet as viable airline choices.

Upon arrival at the Trivandrum airport, hiring a taxi is the most convenient mode of transportation to Ashtamudi. To secure the best fare, it is advisable to approach the information desk at the airport for guidance and engage in a bit of friendly haggling to ensure an optimal price.

Another nearby airport is in Kochi, with Ashtamudi approximately 140 kilometres away. The overland journey from Kochi to Ashtamudi spans about 3 hours and 30 minutes.

By Public Transport

Bus services connect Kollam with various cities, facilitating convenient travel. My journey from Bangalore involved taking an overnight bus from Bangalore Silkboard to Kollam. Following my arrival in Kollam, I opted for an auto-rickshaw (tuk-tuk) to reach Ashtamudi. The one-way bus fare amounted to approximately INR 800, and I secured my booking through the RedBus website.

Ashtamudi finds its closest urban companion in Kollam, a mere 12 kilometres away, with a quick and convenient 20-minute journey. Optimal access to Ashtamudi involves reaching Kollam through alternative modes of transportation, followed by a seamless transition to Ashtamudi via an auto-rickshaw (tuk-tuk).

Nestled in the backdrop of a serene lake, the 1-bedroom unit I stayed in offered a picturesque view reminiscent of water bungalows on the lake.

For those seeking a delightful stay, this haven is easily accessible for booking through Agoda website. The studio unit, priced at approximately INR 7000, includes the added perk of a complimentary breakfast, enhancing the overall value of the stay. The tranquillity of the surroundings and the unique lakeside accommodations create a memorable experience that truly captures the essence of Ashtamudi.

Best Time to Visit Ashtamudi

The optimal period for exploring Ashtamudi is the winter season, from August to January. While the monsoon months of June and July bring heavy rainfall, Ashtamudi transforms into a remarkably picturesque landscape. It radiates a unique beauty amidst the rain. Conversely, it is advisable to steer clear of the summer season, characterized by extreme heat and humidity, to ensure a more comfortable and enjoyable visit to this enchanting destination.

Take a Boat Ride on the Ashtamudi Lake

Ashtamudi Lake captivates with its breathtaking beauty. The ideal approach to fully appreciate and immerse in its charm is embarking on a boat ride across the lake. The cost per person for this enchanting experience is approximately INR 1000.

The depth of Ashtamudi Lake measures an impressive 6.4 meters, adding to the allure of this natural wonder.

Jatayu Earth Centre

The Jatayu Earth Center surpassed all my expectations of beauty. Initially sceptical, I considered it possibly overrated, merely hyped on social media. However, upon visiting, I was awestruck by the sculpture’s sheer artistry. Every detail, from the eyes and face to the wings and even the nails, displayed impeccable craftsmanship.

Situated 350 meters above sea level, the Jatayu Earth Center boasts the world’s most giant bird sculpture of Jatayu. It’s a must-visit destination when exploring Kollam or Ashtamudi in Kerala. Beyond marvelling at the sculpture, the centre offers many activities, including adventurous options. Zip-lining, featuring different levels and heights, promises an exhilarating experience, and there’s also a temple dedicated to Lord Rama.

For those seeking a convenient ascent to the Jatayu sculpture, a cable car ride is available at an approximate cost of INR 500. Tickets can be conveniently purchased at the entrance, making the overall visit to the Jatayu Earth Center a memorable and enriching experience.

Quilon/Tangasseri Lighthouse

The Quilon/Tangasseri Lighthouse is an exceptional vantage point, offering panoramic views of Kollam and its captivating coastline. Witnessing the expanse of the sea and its waters from this vantage is genuinely mesmerizing.

Accessing the top of the lighthouse comes at a nominal cost of just INR 20 per person, and tickets can be conveniently obtained at the entrance.

Janardanaswamy Temple

The Janardanaswamy Temple in Varkala is a sacred site devoted to Lord Vishnu, dating back to 2000 years. Distinguished from other nearby temples, this temple offers a unique and distinctive experience.

Exploring this marvel is fascinating, and I highly recommend visiting this magnificent temple. Conveniently located about 60 kilometres from Ashtamudi, reaching the Janardanaswamy Temple is best accomplished by opting for either an auto-rickshaw or a taxi.

Drink Fresh Juice from a Local Shop

In Ashtamudi, local juice shops are offering freshly prepared fruit juices. These establishments craft the juices right before your eyes, ensuring a delightful and invigorating beverage.

Is Ashtamudi Safe for Solo Female Travellers?

I found Ashtamudi and Kollam to be genuinely secure. Despite not travelling alone, the overall atmosphere instilled a sense of complete safety. Nevertheless, as with any destination, it’s advisable to exercise caution and remain aware of your surroundings, particularly during the evening hours.
