About Bananthi Maari Betta

Named after the village goddess Bananthi Maari Amma, the twin hills offer a secluded trekking experience away from the crowds.

  • Hill 1: The ascent to the peak of the first hill, referred to as Hill #1, is a straightforward trail spanning just one kilometre.
  • Hill 2: Similarly, the journey to the summit of the second hill, or Hill #2, covers a slightly longer distance of 2 kilometres. This hill stands at an elevation of approximately 3000 feet.

I encountered an easily manageable ascent during my trek to hill #2. However, the pathway presented considerable confusion, posing a risk of losing one’s way.

In this narrative, I recount my adventure navigating the trails of Bananthi Maari Betta.

The Bananthi Maari Betta trek remains accessible throughout the year, barring the scorching summer months when the trail can become excessively hot at the summit. Additionally, it’s advisable to avoid trekking during the rainy season due to the risk of slippery rocks along the route.

How to Get to Bananthi Maari Betta?

Situated near Kanakpura, approximately 3 kilometres away, Bananthi Maari Betta offers a convenient escape from urban life. The distance from Bangalore to the Bananthi Maari temple is about 75 kilometres, with a travel time of around 2 hours and 10 minutes by road.

By Public Transport

  • Metro – Another option is to take the metro’s purple line from Majestic to Kanakpura. For detailed train schedules and further inquiries, refer to the Namma Metro website.

Statistics of the Bananthi Maari Betta Trek

The Bananthi Maari Betta trail winds through dense forests and rocky terrain. Beginning at a barricade, the initial stretch offers a relatively flat path before veering into a steep, rocky ascent. While arrows mark the route, it’s advisable to accompany a trekking agency to mitigate the risk of getting lost.

For independent trekkers, the starting point is near the temple. Follow the trail from the temple entrance, veering left before reaching a giant sacred tree.

  • Starting and Finishing Points: Bananthi Maari Amma Temple.

Trekking Agency

I joined the adventure with Bangalore Mountaineering Club (BMC) Adventures, and once again, it was an enjoyable experience. The day was impeccably organized, and I relished mingling with fellow adventurers in the group.

For trekking Hill #1, consider Plan the Unplanned (PTU). Although I didn’t personally trek with them, my BMC trekking lead informed me that PTU organizes excursions to Hill #1.

Important Information

  • If you’re embarking on this trail solo, enlisting a local’s guidance is essential as the path can be quite secluded and easy to lose your way.

  • Every Sunday, the village offers a non-vegetarian lunch for all, including trekkers. If you opt out of the meal, be prepared to contribute some cash.
  • Wear sturdy and comfortable shoes suitable for navigating rocky terrain and bushy areas.
  • Pack a compact day bag with a securely packed lunch.
  • Carry an extra pair of socks for unforeseen circumstances.

  • Adopt a slow and mindful pace while trekking, taking small steps and avoiding rushing through the journey.

Is Bananthi Maari Betta Trek Safe for Solo Female Trekkers?

The Bananthi Maari Betta trail is renowned for its isolation, earning it the moniker “Karadi Betta” due to the presence of bears in the area. Given this wildlife factor, I strongly advise against embarking on a solo trek to Bananthi Maari Betta without the guidance of a qualified expert. Opting for a trekking agency or enlisting the assistance of a knowledgeable local guide is the safest approach to navigating this terrain.

Download the Emergency Plus app for any unforeseen situations. The app does not require a mobile network; it shows your location. This is useful to inform the emergency services in case of any emergency.
If you are a tourist, always have good comprehensive travel insurance to cover yourself in case of any emergency.
