Confession time! Moldova and Chisinau were off my radar until this trip to Europe, marking my third visit to the continent. Despite previous European explorations, the Eastern side remained uncharted territory for me. During a 1.5-week stay in Bucharest, I realized the city and its surroundings didn’t require such an extensive timeframe for exploration. Eager to make the most of my time, I began researching alternative destinations and initially considered Budapest. However, logistical constraints, including limited days and a lengthy 16-hour bus journey, made it impractical. Consequently, my quest led me to discover Chisinau as a viable and intriguing alternative.

About Chisinau

Nestled as the capital city of the Republic of Moldova, Chisinau stands as a testament to a unique blend of history and architecture. Renowned for its Soviet-style buildings, Chisinau is a city that unfolds layers of the past through its structures. The etymology of its name, Chisinau, is speculated to have roots in the Russian words “chisla” and “noua,” translating to spring or source of water and new, respectively. This linguistic origin adds a poetic touch to the city’s identity, highlighting its connection to vital elements of nature and renewal.

Chisinau’s skyline narrates a tale of bygone eras, with Soviet influences evident in the architectural landscape. The city, often called the “White Stone Town,” resonates with historical significance and a distinct charm. As visitors traverse its streets, they encounter a visual journey through time, appreciating the past’s intricate details and design principles.

Chisinau

Beyond its architectural allure, Chisinau exudes a vibrant atmosphere with parks, cultural institutions, and a dynamic urban life. The juxtaposition of tradition and modernity makes Chisinau a captivating destination, inviting exploration into its rich cultural tapestry and the echoes of a bygone era that still resonate in its streets and squares.

How to Get to Chisinau?

By Air

Chisinau boasts a well-equipped airport for incoming flights. The process of reaching Chisinau by air is uncomplicated, with the city enjoying robust connectivity to numerous international destinations. As the primary entry point, Chisinau International Airport is the main gateway to the capital city.

By Bus

Nevertheless, I chose the budget-friendly transport option from Bucharest, which involved taking a bus. The bus reservation was made through the Alverstur website. It’s important to note that the bus journey lasts approximately 9 hours and falls short in terms of comfort compared to options like FlixBus.

Important Reminder: Passport and visa checks are conducted at the border. Therefore, a valid passport and visa for entry into the country is crucial.

Language in Chisinau

The primary language spoken in Chisinau, the capital city of Moldova, is Romanian. Moldovan is often considered a regional variant of the Romanian language and is used in official documents and communication. Russian is also widely spoken and understood, especially among the older population and in more formal settings, given Moldova’s historical ties to the Soviet Union. Additionally, you may encounter people who speak Ukrainian, Gagauz, or Bulgarian, reflecting the country’s diverse linguistic landscape.

Chisinau

Communicating in English posed challenges, as English proficiency among locals was limited. Learning some basic Russian, Moldovan, or Romanian words proved helpful.

Credit/Debit Cards

Fortunately, my non-European-issued Visa card was widely accepted at ATMs throughout the city, ensuring a smooth financial experience. Most cafes and restaurants also welcomed card payments, easing any concerns about currency.
