Initially surprised to learn of the Grand Canyon in Australia, having associated the name primarily with the iconic site in the USA, I was intrigued by the existence of its own Grand Canyon track in Australia. While it may not boast the same grandeur as its American counterpart, the prospect of exploring the natural beauty that locals raved about intrigued me. A couple of years ago, my friends and I made the decision to embark on this track and witness the beauty firsthand. I can genuinely attest that we were not disappointed; the walk proved to be truly amazing and remarkably picturesque.

Certain segments of the walk exude a magical and mystical ambiance. Amidst the rocks and canyon, the vibrant greenery of plants and bushes creates a visually enchanting spectacle. The trail encompasses a descent into the canyon, featuring a long set of stairs, followed by a flat stretch before ascending steeply with another flight of stairs.

Keep an eye out for the captivating presence of small rainbows near the waterfalls, adding a touch of wonder to the overall experience.

Best Time to Hike the Grand Canyon Walk Blue Mountains

The Grand Canyon walk can be undertaken throughout the year, but it’s advisable to steer clear of this hike during the rainy season. Heavy rainfall makes the path and stairs exceedingly slippery, posing potential hazards. Exercise caution with the slush and algae on the rocks.

When navigating the trail, pay careful attention to your footing and ensure a firm grip. Some steps may require hopping, and it’s essential to be mindful of areas with green moss, as they can be particularly slippery. Safety and surefootedness are key considerations during the hike.

How to Get to Evans Lookout Car Park?

The Evans Lookout car park, serving as the walk’s starting point, is approximately 4 kilometers from Blackheath station.

By Public Transport: Regular train services operate between Sydney Central and Blackheath, facilitating easy access for those relying on public transportation. Visitors can refer to the Transport for NSW website for comprehensive and up-to-date information on public transportation options, including train schedules.
By Road – The Grand Canyon Walk is located in the Blackheath area. The most convenient and efficient way to reach the starting point, either Evans Lookout or the Grand Canyon car park, is by driving. The Grand Canyon car park is approximately 115 kilometers away, translating to a roughly 2-hour drive from Sydney.

Please be aware that certain roads between the Grand Canyon car park and Sydney are toll roads, and toll charges apply.

Important Information

Footwear: Always wear sturdy and comfortable shoes.
Caution on Slippery Surfaces: The stairs and path can become very slippery.
Extra Socks: Carry an extra pair of socks, just in case of unexpected water encounters.
Mind Edges and Cliffs: Be cautious around the edges and cliffs.
Starting Point: Consider starting from the Grand Canyon car park, which is relatively easier than starting from the Evans Lookout car park.

Logistics

Starting and Finishing Points: The Grand Canyon Walk offers two starting points: Evans Lookout and Grand Canyon Car Park. As this is a loop trail, you can commence the walk from either location. Having experienced the hike from both starting points, I recommend initiating the route from the Grand Canyon car park.
Total Distance: The Grand Canyon walk is an approximately 6.3-kilometer loop. If you begin the hike from Blackheath train station, the total distance covered for the round trip will be 15 kilometers.
Walk type: Loop.
Time taken: 3 to 3.5 hours.
Grade: Moderate (some sections are very steep and have many stairs).
Cost: Free.
Elevation: 240 metres.
Path: If you start from the Grand Canyon car park, then the path is Grand Canyon car park –> Neates Glen –> Grand Canyon –> Lizard Rock –> Evans lookout –> Evans Lookout car park.

Absolutely, yes. I wholeheartedly affirm that the Grand Canyon walk is exceptionally safe for solo female travelers. The trail is well-traveled, with a constant flow of people, ensuring you never feel alone or uneasy. The well-defined path of the Grand Canyon loop walk eliminates the possibility of getting lost. However, exercise caution around edges and slippery stairs to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.
