About Kiama

Nestled along the New South Wales (NSW) coastline of Australia, Kiama emerges as a captivating coastal town renowned for its natural wonders, most notably the iconic Blowhole. This geological marvel showcases the mesmerising spectacle of water shooting into the air, gracefully choreographed between two cliffside caverns.

Did you know that the name “Kiama” translates to “where the sea makes a noise”? It’s remarkably fitting, especially considering the town’s fame for its spectacular blowhole.

Beyond its geological glamour, Kiama stands as an inviting coastal escape, particularly enticing for those seeking respite from the urban hustle of Sydney. The town’s charm extends beyond its natural attractions, with a selection of remarkable cafes and restaurants awaiting discovery. These culinary havens not only offer delectable fare but also serve as idyllic spots for a leisurely and relaxed lunch, enhancing the overall experience of a Kiama sojourn.

Bombo Quarry

Situated 2 kilometres from Kiama, Bombo Beach offers an enchanting escape. Adjacent to the beach lies Bombo Headland Quarry, accessible via an unmarked path between Kiama Downs and Kiama.

Renowned among photographers, the quarry provides a unique vantage point to witness the turbulent sea. The presence of basalt columns creates an otherworldly atmosphere as the ocean swiftly surges up and down.

Exercise caution when exploring the quarry, as the rocks can be perilous with the sea’s rapid and unpredictable movements.

Whale Watching

Kiama features several vantage points for whale watching during the migratory season, which spans from May to October. I have learned that specific locations within the town, particularly near the lighthouse, offer excellent opportunities to spot humpback whales. It’s worth noting, however, that I haven’t had the chance to personally witness whales in Kiama.
