About Murdeshwara

Murdeshwara, situated in the Bhatkal taluk of Karnataka, India, rests on the picturesque west coast of the southern region. While the climate remains warm year-round, the most favourable time to visit is between October and February, when the weather is pleasantly mild. A weekend getaway is all it takes to uncover the charms of Murdeshwara.

Legend has it that the roots of Murdeshwara trace back to the Hindu epic Ramayana. In this tale, Hindu deities sought immortality by worshipping a divine Linga known as Atma Linga. Ravana, driven by a similar desire for eternal life, fervently prayed to Lord Shiva for the boon of the Atma Linga. Moved by his devotion, Lord Shiva granted Ravana’s wish with one crucial stipulation – the Linga must never touch the ground.

When Ravana embarked on his journey with the sacred Atma Linga, Lord Vishnu intervened to thwart his plans. Disguised as a Brahmin boy, Lord Ganesha struck a deal with Ravana, agreeing to hold the Linga temporarily. However, he set a condition that if Ravana failed to return promptly after three calls, the Linga would be placed on the ground. Lord Ganesha fulfilled his promise despite Ravana’s delay, leading to the Linga’s fragmentation.

The scattered pieces of the Atma Linga left a trail of sacred sites: the head fell at Suratkal, the case covering at Sajjeshwara, the lid at Guneshwara (now known as Gunavanthe and Dhareshwara), and finally, the cloth covering at Mrideshwara, now revered as Murdeshwara. This divine tale adds a mystical allure to Murdeshwara’s rich cultural heritage, inviting visitors to explore its spiritual significance and natural beauty.

RNS Guest House

Due to the total occupancy at RNS Residency, we opted for accommodation at RNS Guest House, a more affordable extension of the leading property. Despite the promising view from the rooms and a spacious balcony, my experience at the guest house left much to be desired.

One of the main drawbacks was the staff shortage, as most resources were allocated to RNS Residency. This resulted in a lack of attention to detail and subpar maintenance standards. Regrettably, the room cleanliness fell short of expectations, detracting from the overall comfort of the stay.

Based on my experience, I would not recommend staying at RNS Guest House unless necessary. While the views may be appealing, the compromised service and cleanliness detract significantly from the overall guest experience. Exploring alternative accommodation options is advisable to ensure a more satisfactory stay in Murdeshwara.

Is Murdeshwara Safe for Solo Female Travellers?

Based on my experience, Murdeshwara is a safe destination for solo female travellers. I encountered no issues or concerns during my solo trip to the town. The religious nature of Murdeshwara fosters a respectful and harmonious atmosphere where individuals are unlikely to face harassment or troubles.

Nevertheless, exercising caution and remaining vigilant, particularly during nighttime outings, is advisable, as in any location. Familiarizing oneself with the surroundings and staying aware of one’s surroundings can further enhance safety measures and contribute to a worry-free travel experience in Murdeshwara.
