Seaside Stroll: Norah Head Lighthouse Walk Experience (2024)

Nestled in the charming town of Norah Head, the Norah Head Lighthouse Walk is an enchanting coastal trail that weaves through the scenic beauty of the Central Coast in New South Wales (NSW). Offering breathtaking views, the walk introduces the visitors to the iconic Norah Head Lighthouse.

I have an enduring fascination with lighthouses and marvel at their architectural marvels. Witnessing a lighthouse in operation is truly captivating. While their primary role is to signal potential dangers to boats and serve as navigational aids, each lighthouse boasts unique designs, making them distinct landmarks along the coast. Often regarded as the traffic signals of the sea, lighthouses hold a special place in my road trip itineraries across Australia’s coastal routes. My Experience of the Guided Tour

Our guide, Chris, offered a detailed history of the lighthouse and insights into its structural design. Constructed in response to numerous shipwrecks in the late 1800s, the Norah Head Lighthouse stands at an impressive height of around 90 feet (27.5 meters). The tower features 96 steps made of concrete with slate treads and cast iron. The initial three stages of the staircase are of the same size, while the final stage consists of narrow and steep stairs.

Chris shared intriguing details about deliberate mistakes incorporated during the construction of the lighthouse. Notably, two intentional errors were made on the door: one of the stars was deliberately left incomplete, and the lion-faced the opposite direction compared to the British symbol, deviating from the usual representation.

It is interesting to note that in earlier times, to be employed in the lighthouse, individuals were required to meet specific criteria—they had to be male, married, and of shorter stature.

Proceeding to the lantern tower, we observed an interesting phenomenon. Despite the appearance of blinking lights from a distance, there were no actual lights blinking; rather, it was the lantern rotating that created this illusion.

I highly recommend taking the 30-minute guided tour. It offers valuable insights into the history and operations of a lighthouse, making it a worthwhile and informative experience.
