One-Day Trip to Stonehenge from London (2024)

Stonehenge, a global marvel, requires no formal introduction. It is one of the world’s wonders and ranks among the United Kingdom’s (UK) most iconic landmarks. During my six-week backpacking journey through Eastern Europe, I dedicated a few days to exploring London before concluding my travels. During this brief stay in the UK capital, I seized the opportunity to embark on a one-day trip to Stonehenge from London.

About Stonehenge

Recognized as a quintessential British cultural icon, Stonehenge graces the Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire, a prehistoric monument of great historical significance. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986, this structure comprises an outer ring of upright standing stones capped by horizontal lintel stones. Within this outer circle, smaller bluestones are arranged. Notably, the monument is meticulously aligned to face the sunrise during the summer solstice.

A unique and unparalleled marvel, Stonehenge is the sole surviving lintelled stone circle worldwide. Its imposing presence and intricate design continue to captivate visitors, sparking awe and fascination as they contemplate this remarkable archaeological treasure’s mysteries and ancient history.

History, Mystery, and Folklore of Stonehenge

Stonehenge remains mysterious, as no written records about its construction or purpose have been discovered. Archaeologists estimate its construction spanned from 3000 BC to 2000 BC, yet its exact origin and function elude definitive explanation. One prevailing theory posits Stonehenge as a burial ground, supported by the discovery of human bone deposits on the site. Alternatively, it is suggested to be a pilgrimage site with potential healing properties or a symbolic representation of peace and unity.

An intriguing find in 1923 revealed the remains of a 7th-century man, further deepening the enigma surrounding Stonehenge. Folklore weaves additional layers of intrigue, with one tale attributing the creation of Stonehenge to Merlin, the wizard of Arthurian legend, who supposedly transported the colossal stones from Ireland via giants. Other folkloric narratives propose diverse origins, from invading Danes to Roman temple ruins, and some even posit Stonehenge as a landing area for extraterrestrial beings.

Adding to the mystique, the rocks at Stonehenge, dubbed “ringing rocks,” produce a resonant clanging sound when struck. This acoustic phenomenon, coupled with myriad theories and legends, enhances the enigmatic allure of Stonehenge, inviting visitors to contemplate its ancient secrets and ponder the various tales that surround this extraordinary archaeological wonder.

Visitor Information

  • Stonehenge welcomes visitors daily from 9:30 AM to 5 PM, with varying entry fees for adults ranging from £22.80 to £19.50, depending on the type of ticket selected.
