About The Colosseum

Completed in 80 AD under the Roman emperor Titus Caesar Vespasianus, The Colosseum is a majestic oval amphitheatre at the heart of Rome. Also referred to as the Flavian amphitheatre, it is the largest ancient amphitheatre ever erected, boasting a seating capacity estimated at 50,000 to 80,000 spectators. Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site, this architectural marvel is an integral component of the World Heritage property and the best thing to do in Rome.

Crafted with meticulous precision, the three-tiered structure of The Colosseum showcases a masterful blend of travertine limestone, volcanic rock, and brick-faced concrete. Throughout its illustrious history, it served as the backdrop for gladiatorial contests and public spectacles, entertaining audiences during the early medieval era.

In the Roman Republic and Empire, a gladiator was a skilled combatant who entertained the public by engaging in battles against fellow gladiators and wild beasts and condemning criminals. Often viewed as slaves, many gladiators endured harsh upbringings and were held in low regard by society. Although the gladiator games persisted for centuries, they faced disapproval from various religious beliefs, particularly among Christians.

Ranked among the new Seven Wonders of the World, The Colosseum is an iconic symbol of Imperial Rome and remains a highly sought-after tourist destination in Italy.

Opting for an early morning visit is advisable to bypass crowds and the sweltering heat at the Colosseum. However, experiencing its splendor under the moonlight can also be genuinely breathtaking.

History of the Colosseum

Construction of the Colosseum commenced in 70 and 72 CE during the reign of the Roman emperor Vespasian, but it was officially completed in 80 CE under Titus. Further modifications were carried out by Domitian in 82 CE.

Utilizing a complex system of vaults, the Colosseum stands as a remarkable freestanding structure. Initially, it served as the arena for combats and contests involving gladiators. According to historical studies, approximately 400,000 gladiators were killed within its walls. In medieval times, the Colosseum transformed, serving as both a church and fortress for Roman families.
