Is Viseisei Safe for Solo Female Travellers?

During my visits to Fiji, I’ve had varied experiences that have shaped my perspective on travelling in this beautiful country. On my initial trip with my mother, we encountered an unsettling situation during our visit to Viseisei. A tour guide at the local church demanded money from us before allowing us to leave, leaving us feeling intimidated and vulnerable. Despite feeling apprehensive, I chose to pay a sum of USD 60 to diffuse the situation.

Viseisei

I advise fellow travellers to exercise caution when exploring villages, especially alone or in small groups. It’s common for locals to expect gratuities from tourists, which can sometimes lead to uncomfortable encounters. While incidents like these are unfortunate, they shouldn’t overshadow Fiji’s overall beauty and warmth.

Throughout my travels, I’ve encountered countless friendly and welcoming individuals who have enriched my experiences. Despite the occasional nosiness, which stems from genuine curiosity and friendliness, I’ve always felt safe and appreciated in Fiji. My solo journey on my second visit was delightful, reaffirming my love for this captivating country. Fiji’s stunning landscapes, vibrant culture, and warm hospitality make it a destination worth exploring despite occasional challenges.

Closing Notes

Despite my unfortunate experience, I firmly believe Viseisei should be included in your itinerary when visiting Fiji. The village’s picturesque charm and intriguing stories make it a worthwhile destination. I recommend staying in the town for a night or two to truly immerse yourself in the local culture and create lasting memories.
