About Pura Ulun Danu Temple from Ubud
Pura Ulun Danu Beratan, commonly called Ulun Danu Temple, stands as a 17th-century marvel in Bali, devoted to Lord Shiva and constructed in reverence to Goddess Danu. Nestled 1200 meters above sea level in Denpasar, this sacred site graces the shores of Lake Bratan, earning its place among the esteemed Kahyangan Jagat temples in Bali.
Renowned as the most photographed temple in Bali, Ulun Danu Temple offers a profound spiritual experience. Embracing Balinese architectural elegance, the temple complex boasts a striking 11-storey structure dedicated to Lord Shiva. Perched on the lake, this magnificent edifice creates an illusion of floating serenely on the tranquil waters, adding to the temple’s mystical allure.
Within the temple complex, a Buddhist stupa stands as a place of worship for Buddhists, symbolizing a remarkable embodiment of religious harmony. This harmony gracefully intertwines the realms of Hinduism and Buddhism, showcasing the coexistence of these two profound faiths.
In the Balinese context, Hindu temples are traditionally known as Pura. Operating hours for this temple span from 7 AM to 7 PM on all days, except for Sundays when it opens its gates from 5 AM to 7 PM. A nominal entrance fee of IDR 50,000 per person (please check at the entrance for current rates) is required, and tickets can be conveniently acquired at the temple entrance.
Visitors are advised to wear appropriate clothing as a mark of respect for the sacred premises and the deities. Sarongs, available for borrowing at the entrance, provide an additional layer of cultural reverence.
Notably, the temple complex doesn’t host restaurants or cafes; however, during festivals, temporary food stalls are set up to cater to the needs of those partaking in the celebrations.
Story of Pura Ulun Danu Beratan
The historical chronicles of Pura Ulun Danu Beratan are inscribed on traditional lontar leaves manuscripts. Legend has it that, seeking solace and enlightenment following a defeat in battle, I Gusti Agung Putu embarked on a meditative journey to Mount Mangu, near Lake Beratan. Upon securing victory, he immortalised the moment by erecting a temple at the site, laying the foundation for his empire, the esteemed Mengwi Kingdom.
The same ancient manuscript also reveals that the location has been a consecrated ground for rituals since the Megalithic era. Renamed in honour of Goddess Danu and revered as the queen of water, the temple is a testament to historical triumphs and spiritual significance.
How to Get to Pura Ulun Danu Temple from Ubud or Seminyak?
Optimal transportation in Bali often involves hiring a taxi or renting a motorbike. I opted for a day taxi during my visit, which efficiently transported me from my Seminyak accommodation to the revered temple.
The temple is situated approximately 57 kilometres away from Seminyak, which translates to a journey of about 1 hour and 30 minutes by car. My day taxi service, priced at IDR 500,000, covered the commute to the temple and included visits to various other noteworthy locations.
It’s worth noting that there isn’t a direct bus route to Pura Ulun Danu Beratan. To reach the temple, the preferred modes of transportation are either driving or riding a motorbike or taking a taxi for a convenient and comfortable journey.
Is Ulun Danu Temple Safe for Solo Female Travellers?
In my experience, Bali proved exceptionally safe for solo female travellers, despite differing opinions among fellow travellers. Throughout both of my visits, I encountered no issues, and the majority of people I encountered were friendly and welcoming. However, I exercised caution, notably by limiting my ventures after sunset. It’s worth noting that I explored Bali on two occasions—first with two female friends and later on my own.
As with any destination, vigilance and awareness of your surroundings remain essential, especially during the evenings. Providing secure and well-reviewed accommodations significantly contributes to a safe solo travel experience. Closing Notes
The beauty of this temple enchanted me; it undoubtedly ranks among the finest in Bali. Regretfully, I didn’t allocate enough time to thoroughly explore and appreciate its surroundings. I wholeheartedly suggest including a visit to this temple, alongside Tanah Lot, during your Bali itinerary. My intention is to return to Bali, delving deeper into the rich history and traditions encapsulated within these remarkable temples.
