Yogyakarta is the capital city of Special Region of Yogyakarta in Indonesia. Even though famous for the Buddhist temple Borobudur, Yogyakarta offers plenty of adventurous and cultural activities to tourists and travelers.
Even some of the spots around Yogyakarta are very fascinating and interesting. You can take plenty of one day tours from the city. One such tour is to Dieng Plateau that has old temples dating back to the 8th century.
About Jomblang Cave
Jomblang cave is a vertical cave with a forest inside the cave. The cave was formed by a natural geological process when the soil and all vegetations on it crumbled some thousands years ago. The cave has a forest and also water as Kalisuci river flows at the bottom of the cave.
About Caving adventure in Yogyakarta
One of the most adventurous activities I have done in Indonesia is the caving adventure in Jomblang cave. This caving adventure is operated by a local operator Jomblang Cave Tours and Travels.
It is surely for the travelers who seek adventures as you can go inside a cave and explore the wild side of the cave. The adventure seekers are harnessed with ropes and safety gear where they abseil into the cave for about 90 metres.
- Wear sturdy and comfortable shoes for the activity.
After entering the cave, you can walk around and at a distance of just 500 metres from the drop point are some of the spectacular photographic points, where the light plays hide and seek inside the cave.
- Carry a torch with you as the tour agency do not provide any torches.
Booking and cost
The cave is open for the activity only over the weekends between 7 AM and 7 PM. It is best to either book through a trusted website like Viator or to talk to one of the local taxi drivers in Yogyakarta as they are aware of the activity. This activity can also be booked at the office, which is the entrance of Jomblang cave.
- Try to reach the Jomblang cave early as only limited people are allowed inside the cave.
The caving adventure cost around Indonesian Rupees 450000 per person that includes the transportation to the cave, the caving adventure and the guide charges.
- Ensure to carry cash as cash is the only mode of payment.
How to get to Jomblang Cave?
The best way to reach Jomblang Cave is by a car or two wheeler. Located in Gunungkidul Regency of Yogyakarta region, the distance between Yogyakarta city and the cave is around 50 kilometres and the journey by road takes about 1 hour 20 minutes.
Unfortunately, there is no public transportation to Jomblang Cave and the only way to get to the cave is by driving or hiring a taxi.
Safety for solo female travelers
Traveling to Yogyakarta or Jomblang Cave is very safe for solo female travelers. I traveled to these places alone and I did not have any issues as such. But I did not venture out at night alone and took necessary precautions. Like any other place in the world, know your surroundings and be careful, especially after dark.
Download Emergency Plus app for any unforeseen situations. The app does not require mobile network and it shows the location of where you are. This is useful to let the emergency services know, in case there is any emergency.
If you are a tourist, always make sure to have a good comprehensive travel insurance to cover yourself in case of any emergency.
The caving adventure in Yogyakarta is surely one of the must do activities in Yogyakarta. It is absolutely unique and is perfect for adventure lovers. I highly recommend doing this activity when you are in Yogyakarta.
