Hazararama Temple, a temple narrating Ramayana

Hazararama Temple, a temple narrating Ramayana

Hazararama temple is another temple, after the Vitthala temple, that is my favourite among all the monuments in Hampi. The temple has amazing architecture and has a story to tell. I was amazed by the intricate details of the carvings and how beautiful the temple is with so much of craftmanship.

About Hazararama Temple

Dedicated to Lord Rama, the Hazararama temple was once a private temple for the Kings of Vijayanagara empire. This temple was probably used only by the kings and the royal family. Even though the temple is small, it is very popular for the structures and carvings depicting the mythological story of Ramayana.

Built in the 15th century by Devaraya II, King of Vijayanagara Dynasty, the Hazararama temple has stunning relics of scenes from Ramayana and processions of horses, elephants, soldiers and dancing women.

Located in the Royal enclosure section of Hampi, the Hazararama temple is surely one of the must visits to see the Vijayanagara architecture and art work. There are multiple theories as to how the name Hazararama is derived. One theory is that the name translates to thousand Ramas which in turn refers to multitude of relics depicting the life of Rama in the temple. Another theory is that Haza means outskirts and that the temple of Rama was on the outskirts of the main enclosure.

Did you know that the group of monuments in Hampi are declared as UNESCO Heritage site?

The best time to visit the temple is in the winter season which are between the months of November and March. Visitors need about 1.5 to 2 hours to explore the temple. The temple is very well maintained and is in very good condition.

Architecture of Hazararama Temple

The temple is built in the Vijayanagara style of architecture and is in the form of comic-strip-like carvings narrating the story from Ramayana. Initially built as a simple structure with a sanctum, pillared hall and ardha mantapa, the temple was later renovated to include more detailed pillars and an open porch.

The temple currently has an entrance mantapa and a yajna ceremony hall. The walls of the temple are highly decorated with carvings and inscriptions. Inside the mantapa are four pillars made in Hoysala style of architecture.

Visitor Information

  • The temple is open between 6 AM and 6 PM every day.
  • There is no entrance fee to enter the temple.
  • Photography and videography is allowed inside the temple.
  • DO NOT throw garbage in the premises and only dispose it in the nearest dustbin.
