Comprehensive Packing List for Your Long Overseas Travel (2025)
Packing for long overseas travel can be overwhelming, and I’ll admit it’s stressful. I often pack more than necessary because I leave it until the last minute. To make the process smoother for myself and others, I created a packing list to ensure nothing essential is left behind while avoiding overpacking.

This list is divided into three sections for better organization.
The first section focuses on the items that go into the suitcase—clothes, footwear, toiletries, and other essentials needed for the trip’s duration. Keeping this section organised helps me avoid digging through my bag for every little thing.
The second section covers what I pack in my backpack, including items I’ll need on the go, like travel documents, electronics, snacks, and entertainment. Since the backpack stays with me during travel, I ensure it’s lightweight yet holds all the essentials I might need.
The third section is my first aid kit, a non-negotiable part of my packing. It includes basic medications, band-aids, and any personal medical supplies required during the trip. This ensures I’m prepared for minor emergencies.
This checklist makes me feel more confident about packing efficiently and travelling stress-free. If packing overwhelms you, too, this guide might come in handy!

Packing List for Long Overseas Travel
One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned through travelling is the importance of packing and travelling light. While it may seem challenging initially, it becomes easier with some planning and practice. Travelling light makes the journey more comfortable and allows you to move freely without the burden of heavy luggage.

A great way to start packing light is using the packing-by-numbers system. This method involves deciding on a specific number of each item to bring, such as three tops, two bottoms, or one pair of shoes, based on the duration and nature of your trip. It helps eliminate unnecessary items and ensures you pack only what you truly need.
Planning your outfits and choosing versatile pieces can also significantly reduce the number of items you carry. Opting for travel-sized toiletries and packing essentials like a laundry bag or detergent for washing clothes on longer trips can save space.
If you’re looking for more practical ideas, check out the post on the top 20 tips on how to pack light. These tips include rolling clothes, packing cubes, and avoiding last-minute packing. By implementing these techniques, you can master the art of travelling light and enjoy a hassle-free experience.
Packing light might take some effort initially, but it is well worth it for the convenience and freedom it brings to your travels!
When I am going on overseas travel, I carry a suitcase and a backpack. In this post, I have divided the sections of the packing list based on my suitcase and my backpack.

Part 2 of Packing List – What’s in My Backpack?
Backpacks are an essential part of every traveller’s gear. The key to using a backpack effectively is knowing exactly what to pack. Over the years of my travels, I’ve learned how to pack my backpack efficiently, ensuring I have everything I need without overloading it.
The first rule is to prioritize the essentials. I pack items I’ll need access to during travel, such as travel documents, a water bottle, snacks, and electronics like my phone and charger. It’s also important to include a small first aid kit with basic medications and personal items.
To save space and keep my backpack organized, I use packing cubes or ziplock bags to separate clothing and toiletries. I also pack lightweight, versatile clothing that can be worn in different situations, reducing the number of items I carry.
I keep a small pocketbook or notebook for journaling or quick notes and a secure travel lock. And, of course, it’s essential to pack a power bank to keep devices charged during long journeys.
By packing only what I need and organizing my backpack thoughtfully, I can travel comfortably and confidently, with everything I require close at hand.

What’s in My First Aid Kit?
I always carry an up-to-date first aid kit in my backpack. It is essential, especially during activities like hiking or diving, where emergencies can occur unexpectedly. A well-stocked first aid kit ensures you are prepared to manage minor injuries or provide basic care until professional medical help is available.
Note: Ensure you check the expiry date before using any of the medicines. Ensure you don’t carry the scissors and tweezers with the first aid kit if you wish to take the kit as carry-on baggage.
I always carry a small pouch to serve as my first aid kit, even on short hikes and trips. It contains essential items to handle minor injuries and common ailments. Here’s what I include:
- Waterproof band-aids.
- Bandages with adhesive tape or butterfly clips.
- Sunburn treatment (block-out cream).
- Insect repellent (Aeroguard).
- Painkillers (Panadol).
- Anti-nausea tablets.
- Medication for diarrhea and constipation.
- Antiseptic cream or wipes (e.g., Dettol wipes).
- Wet wipes for cleaning.
- Headache relief tablets.
- Scissors and tweezers.
- Medicines for cough and sore throat.
- Eye drops.
This compact kit ensures I’m prepared for minor medical needs, making my travels and hikes safer and stress-free.
