About Jayamangali Blackbuck Reserve
Situated in the Tumkur district, Jayamangali Blackbuck Sanctuary (formerly known as Maidanahalli) stands as a protected haven boasting a significant population of blackbucks amidst vast expanses of Eucalyptus and Acacia auriculiformis grasslands. Spanning 800 acres of pristine landscape, this sanctuary represents Tumkur’s sole protected area, offering an enriching day-trip experience from Bangalore.
The expansive open grassland sanctuary serves as the residence for over 600 blackbucks alongside a diverse array of flora and fauna. With 67 butterfly species, 19 mammal species, 26 reptile species, including snakes, 125 bird species, and 80 plant species, it presents a rich tapestry of biodiversity.
While exploring Jayamangali Blackbuck Sanctuary, venture to Channarayana Durga Fort to glimpse local history and culture.
Optimal times for a visit are during the post-monsoon and winter seasons (October to February), offering pleasant weather conditions. Summers can be sweltering. Plan your visit for early mornings or sunset for an enchanting experience. Although a single day is ample for exploration, accommodations nearby cater to those desiring an extended stay amidst nature’s embrace.

By Road
The distance separating Jayamangali Blackbuck Sanctuary from Bangalore spans approximately 110 kilometres, with a manageable driving time of merely 2 hours and 40 minutes. Accessible via a route featuring toll roads, the journey leads towards Doddaballapura.
By Public Transport
Regrettably, direct public transportation to Jayamangali Blackbuck Sanctuary is unavailable.

About Blackbucks
Residing amidst the verdant grasslands, the blackbuck is a revered antelope species indigenous to India and Nepal. Adorned with distinctive features, they sport white fur on the chin complemented by striking black stripes adorning the face. The hues of their coats range from light brown to dark brown, occasionally even transitioning to black. Notably, males boast elegantly ringed horns, adding to their majestic appearance. Regrettably, blackbucks face the looming threat of extinction, prompting their protection under the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972.

Blackbucks in Jayamangali
Following the Ranebennur Blackbuck Sanctuary, approximately 300 kilometres from Bangalore, Jayamangali Blackbuck Sanctuary emerges as the second-largest sanctuary dedicated to these majestic creatures in Karnataka. As per the census data 2002, the refuge is home to an estimated 600 blackbucks. A visit to this sanctuary promises sightings of numerous blackbucks peacefully roaming the expanse, basking in the freedom of their natural habitat.
Visitor Information
- The sanctuary welcomes visitors from 6 AM to 6 PM daily, with an entrance fee of INR 100 per person.
