About La Perouse to Maroubra Walk
The La Perouse to Maroubra walking track comprises two main sections:
- Henry’s Head and Cape Banks Walk.
- As you progress, the journey seamlessly transitions from Cape Banks to the final stretch leading to Maroubra Beach.
Section 1: Henry’s Head and Cape Banks Walk
Explore the breathtaking coastal beauty of La Perouse in Sydney through the enchanting Henry’s Head and Cape Banks Walks. Serving as an extension to Henry’s Head, the Cape Banks walk offers a leisurely and scenic stroll with panoramic ocean views.
While it’s a prime spot for whale watching, my personal experiences have yet to reveal a glimpse of these majestic creatures. Along the way, discover historical remnants such as World War II bunkers and a fort at Henry Head, adding a touch of intrigue to this picturesque coastal adventure.
I have completed this walk several times, including incorporating it into my training for The Bloody Long Walk.
A heads up: expect encounters with numerous reptiles and wildlife along the route. Be sure to embrace the fascinating natural diversity during your journey.

Whale Watching
The La Perouse to Maroubra walk is excellent for spotting some whales during the whale migration season. Humpback and Southern Right whales are often spotted on the eastern coast of Australia between May and October. They migrate from Antarctica to upnorth Queensland and then return every year. As they pass through the coastal line of New South Wales, every hiker takes an opportunity to walk on these paths to look out for these beautiful, gentle giants.
Do watch out for the whales.

Is La Perouse to Maroubra Walk Safe for Solo Female Hikers?
Sydney is incredibly safe for solo female travelers; this walk is no exception. The path is well-traveled, with numerous fellow hikers and walkers, ensuring a secure environment. However, exercise additional caution around cliffs, edges, and golf courses, particularly during windy conditions or when golfers are active.
It’s important to note that, based on advice from my taxi driver, a bit more vigilance is suggested in the Malabar and Maroubra suburbs. Be aware of your surroundings, especially at night, and be cautious of any suspicious activities in these areas.
