What is Forget Me Not Plant and Flower?

The Forget-me-not plant goes by the scientific name Myosotis Scorpion grasses. Derived from the Ancient Greek term “mouse’s ear,” these flowering plants earned their name due to the petals’ striking resemblance to this tiny anatomical feature. Characterised by hairy stems that can grow up to 25 centimetres tall, these plants boast lovely blue flowers that grace the landscape during the spring and summer seasons. However, come winter, these vibrant blooms gracefully fade away.

Forget Me Not flowers represent true love and relationships. They are a symbol of being truthful and loyal to someone. It is believed that if these flowers are given to someone, it means that that person is truly loved and respected by the person who gave them.

Legend Behind the Name “Forget Me Not”

Numerous legends surround the “Forget-me-not” plant, and one of them recounts a day when God was assigning names to various plants. A small blue-flowered plant standing modestly in a corner went overlooked during this divine task. Seizing the moment, the plant stepped forward and pleaded, “Forget me not, my Lord!”

Another legend recounts God strolling in the Garden of Eden, where he encountered a blue flower. Inquiring about its name, the timid flower whispered that it had forgotten. In response, God bestowed a new name upon the plant and its blooms, calling it “Forget-me-not” to assure that He would never forget.

The third legend narrates a tale of a French knight and his lady by the river. Spotting a stunning blue flower, the knight, weighed down by his armour, stooped to pluck it. He lost his balance and plunged into the river’s current in a fateful twist. Moments before disappearing beneath the water’s surface, he hurled the blue flower to his lady, passionately exclaiming, “Forget me not” in French.
