Alternatively, from September onwards, the post-monsoon period unveils the mountains adorned in lush greenery, offering an equally enchanting trekking experience.

During our trek, we were privileged to witness the graceful presence of bison, also known as Indian gaurs, alongside an array of captivating bird species and the impressive Malabar giant squirrel. Things to Know Before Going on Kotagiri Trek

• While the Kotagiri trek is relatively easy, staying cautious is important as the trail is teeming with wildlife. Avoid getting too close to animals, and always maintain a safe distance.
• Exercise caution around edges and cliffs, being mindful of your footing with each step.
• Stay hydrated throughout your trek by carrying an ample supply of water. Water sources along the trail are scarce, primarily found at the trailhead, near villages, and waterfalls.
• Beware of leeches along the trail and take necessary precautions. Consider wearing leech socks, readily available online, or carry a solution of Dettol and water to deter them. Alternatively, salt or sanitiser can also effectively detach leeches from your skin.
• Add essential items in a day pack, including sunscreen, a first aid kit, extra socks, trail snacks, chocolates, and sunglasses.
• Please note that there are no restroom facilities available along the trail.
• Ensure you wear durable and comfortable trekking shoes to navigate the terrain safely.
• Pack a lunch to enjoy along the way, as no dining options are available on the trail.

During our Kotagiri adventure, we were fortunate to lodge at the picturesque Sparrow Nest Homestay. The homestay caters to diverse preferences by offering dormitory accommodations for larger groups and tent options for those seeking a more adventurous experience. I found the tent enchanting, especially beneath the star-studded sky.

How to Get to Kotagiri?

Travelling to Kotagiri offers multiple options:

• By Air – The closest airport is Coimbatore, which is approximately 100 kilometres away. Coimbatore Airport boasts excellent connectivity with major cities across India and several international destinations.
• By Road – Kotagiri is approximately 350 kilometres from Bangalore, with an estimated travel time of 8 hours by road. Additionally, Ooty, located just 30 kilometres from Kotagiri, is easily accessible within an hour’s drive.

• By Public Transport – Regular bus services, operated by government and private operators, ply between Bangalore and Ooty. The journey by bus typically spans around 8 hours, providing an economical and convenient travel option.

Is Kotagiri Trek Safe for Solo Female Trekkers?

Following trekking best practices, it’s advisable to embark on treks accompanied by a trekking buddy or within a group. This ensures safety and support in case of unforeseen circumstances.
