With stunning beaches and crystal clear waters, Mykonos is one of the Greek Islands to visit in the Aegean Sea. Known as the party capital of Greece, Mykonos has a vibrant and colourful party vibes. The island is also known as The Island of the Winds due to the strong winds.

History of Mykonos

Dating back to the 11th century BC, Mykonos was first inhabited by Ionians and was a significant centre of trade. The island thrived as a maritime and trading power, Mykonos was part of the Delian League during the Classical and Hellenistic periods. Then the island became part of Roman rule and then Byzantine Empire.

In the 13th century, Mykonos came under Venetian control when the fortifications were built. It was then captured by the Ottoman Empire until it gained independence in 1821.

Best Time to Visit Mykonos

The best time to visit Mykonos is during the autumn (fall) and spring seasons. Autumn is between the months of April and May, and Spring is between the months of August and October. July is the hottest month of the year.

You need at least 3 days in Mykonos to enjoy all the things that it can offer, especially the party scenes. But as I was visiting this island as part of the 7-nights Idyllic Aegean cruise, I had only one day to enjoy the island.

Also known as Chora, Mykonos Town is the vibrant capital of Mykonos. Popular for its traditional Cycladic architecture, narrow streets and white-washed building, Chora is home to several landmarks, including the famous Paraportiani Church.

Thanks to Mykonos’s beautiful and stunning beaches, sunbathing is a delightful experience when you are in Mykonos. You must try to visit some of the below beaches if not all.

• Popular among the LGBTQIA+ community, Super Paradise beach is perfect for sunbathers.

One of the must-visit places in Mykonos Town is windmill in the neighbourhood of Alefkandra (Little Venice). The best time to visit these windmills is during the sunset or the golden hour.

Dating back to the 16th century, the windmills of Mykonos were constructed by Venetians to mill grain. Characterised by their cylindrical shape and conical roofs, the windmills were designed to take advantage of the strong winds that blow across the island.

Soak in the View at Little Venice

Situated on the western side of Mykonos Town, Little Venice is a row of colourful, traditional Cycladic buildings with their balconies overhanging the sea, resembling the architecture of Venice in Italy. It is home to numerous waterfront cafes and restaurants providing outdoor seating directly by the sea.

Also known as the Castle of Chora or the Kastro, the Mykonos Castle is a historical site and a collection of fortified buildings and walls that served as a defensive structure during the Middle Ages. Mykonos has its own airport that serves as domestic and international airport. You can fly into Mykonos International Airport which is about 4 kilometres from Mykonos Town.

By Cruise

There are many cruises that sail in the Aegean region stop by at Mykonos. Mykonos has two ports. The main one is the New Port (Tourlos) and the Old Port is mainly used for cruise ships and private yachts. Most ferry services arrive at the New Port. One of the major port stops on the 7-night Idyllic Aegean cruise by Celestyal Cruises is Mykonos. I had a day to explore the island of Mykonos.
