Indonesian Visa Requirements

The Bali Provincial Government has implemented a fresh tourist levy of IDR 150,000 per individual for foreign visitors entering Bali. This levy differs from the e-Visa on Arrival or the Visa on Arrival. Convenient cashless payments can be completed online before departure or upon arrival at designated payment counters located at Bali’s airport and seaport.

The visas (e-visa or visa on arrival) typically offer a 30- or 60-day single-entry validity period within a 90-day overall validity period. It’s crucial to schedule your departure from Indonesia within this 90-day timeframe.

Visa on arrival can be obtained at multiple international airports such as Jakarta, Yogyakarta, or Denpasar. e-Visas are only accepted in Jakarta or Denpasar. The cost for a visa on arrival is USD 36 or AUD 47.

For Indian Citizens

Indian citizens must possess a valid tourist visa to enter Indonesia. They can acquire an e-visa or visa at various international airports.

For Australian Citizens

For Australians planning to visit Indonesia, a valid tourist visa is necessary. Similar to Indian citizens, Aussies have the option to secure an e-visa or obtain a visa on arrival at multiple international airports.

For US Citizens

US citizens are not required to obtain a visa for a stay of up to 30 days in Indonesia. All that’s needed is a valid passport (with at least six months validity) and proof of a return or onward journey.

Best Time to Visit Bali

Bali experiences two main seasons: the dry season (from April to October) and the wet season (from November to March).

Dry seasonApril to October
Wet seasonNovember to March
Seasons of Bali

The dry season, from April to October, is the best time to visit. The weather is generally sunny during this period, with lower humidity and minimal rainfall. This makes it ideal for outdoor activities such as surfing, snorkelling, trekking, and exploring the island’s cultural attractions.

The wet season brings higher humidity and occasional heavy rainfall from November to March. While this may deter some travellers, enjoying Bali during this time is still possible, especially if you prefer fewer crowds and lower prices. The lush landscapes are at their greenest during the wet season, and you’ll likely encounter stunning tropical storms followed by clear skies.

Bali’s peak tourist season is from June to August and during the Christmas and New Year holidays. The prices are higher during this period as there are more tourists, especially from Australia.

Number of Days Required for Bali

Bali boasts many attractions to suit varying travel preferences. While some visitors opt for a brief five-day getaway to glimpse its wonders, others extend their stay for several months, immersing themselves in the island’s unique lifestyle.

However, for those seeking a balanced experience, a typical Bali itinerary typically spans 5 to 10 days. This duration allows travellers to delve deeply into the island’s diverse offerings, from its cultural landmarks and scenic landscapes to its vibrant culinary scene and adventurous activities.

SIM Card

If you are staying in Bali for at least 7 days, it is advisable to buy a SIM card for convenient communication and internet access. SIM cards are easily available at the airport upon arrival. You must submit your passport and choose a plan based on the number of days you will stay and the data you require.

On my last visit, I purchased a SIM card from XL Axiata. It offered 43 GB of data and cost IDR 350,000. This plan was valid for one month, providing ample data for my stay. The process was straightforward and quick, allowing me to stay connected without any hassles.

Money Exchange

Bali has numerous money exchange providers offering better rates than the airport. You can exchange various currencies for Indonesian Rupiah (IDR) in cash. Currency exchange transactions are only cash; you do not need to provide your passport when exchanging money in Bali.

However, be aware that Indian Rupees are not widely accepted. Only a few money exchange centers will take them. It is advisable to bring USD, AUD, or Euros for a smoother exchange process.

ATM

Bali has many ATMs where you can withdraw money using a Visa or Mastercard. However, your bank and the ATM provider may apply extra charges. Before making a withdrawal, check the fees to avoid any unexpected costs.

Tips for Female Travellers

While Bali warmly embraces tourists and travellers, it’s essential to remember a few things to have a memorable experience on the island.

  1. Stay aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas and at night.
  2. Dress modestly, particularly when visiting temples and rural areas, to show respect for local customs and traditions. You must wear sarongs while visiting temples, which you can take at the entrance. Not that renting sarong is included in your entrance tickets and that you do not need to buy them separately.
  3. Use reputable transportation services, such as registered taxis or ride-sharing apps like Grab or Gojek, especially when travelling alone at night.
  4. Keep your belongings secure and avoid displaying expensive items like jewellery or electronics in public.
  5. Trust your instincts and avoid situations or places that make you feel uncomfortable.
  6. Research and book accommodations in safe and well-reviewed areas.
  7. Stay informed about local customs and cultural norms to avoid unintentional offence.
  8. Exercise caution when using your credit cards, as there are many scams. On my initial trip, my credit card was misused, with repeated unauthorised transactions. These transactions often involved minimal amounts, such as $1 or even cents, which initially went unnoticed until my bank alerted me to the fraudulent activity.

Balinese Cooking Class

Indulging in a Balinese Cooking Class is a profoundly enriching and culturally immersive experience. Despite my usual reluctance towards culinary pursuits, I made a delightful exception during my recent vacation in Bali. Opting for a comprehensive session, I embarked on a journey to master crafting a traditional Balinese feast.

The class, which lasted 4 to 5 hours and cost around IDR 350,000 per class, offered flexibility with morning or afternoon sessions. Within this timeframe, I delved into the intricate world of Balinese cuisine, unravelling the secrets behind its distinctive flavours and ingredients. From fragrant spices to exotic produce, each element unveiled a fascinating tale of culinary heritage.

Under the expert guidance of Bali Manggang, I was captivated by the culinary intricacies and cultural significance embedded within each dish. The hands-on experience honed my cooking skills and fostered a deeper appreciation for Balinese gastronomy.

Securing my spot through Viator ensured a hassle-free experience from start to finish. The day unfolded seamlessly, commencing with a prompt pick-up from my hotel. Our first stop led us to a vibrant local market, where we handpicked fresh ingredients for our culinary adventure.

Subsequently, we were graciously welcomed into a traditional Balinese home, where the art of crafting authentic Balinese dishes awaited us. Given my dietary preferences, the instructors tailored the experience to accommodate vegetarian cuisine, ensuring I could fully partake in the culinary exploration.

We prepared various vegetarian Balinese specialties, each infused with rich local flavours. Our efforts culminated in a communal dining experience, during which we savoured the fruits of our labour.

The Kecak dance, also known as the “Monkey Dance,” is a dramatic reenactment of the Ramayana story. The performers enact scenes from the epic tale, including the battle between the monkey army and the demon king Ravana.

During my initial visit to Bali, I regretted not indulging in the unique experience of tasting Luwak coffee, renowned as the world’s most expensive coffee. Kopi luwak commands prices ranging from $220 to $1,100 per kilogram.

How Much Does it Cost to Visit Bali?

Bali presents many experiences, such as attaining comfort and luxury at a price. With many high-end resorts, fine dining establishments, and exclusive activities, embracing the finer facets of a Balinese holiday can incur higher expenses than alternative destinations.

Additionally, costs fluctuate depending on the season and chosen accommodation style. Nevertheless, investing in premium accommodations, gastronomic indulgences, and top-notch services promises an unforgettable and gratifying vacation amidst the island’s breathtaking views and dynamic cultural atmosphere.

Flight Tickets

Travellers can find direct flights to Bali from Delhi. Unfortunately, there are not many direct flight options from Bangalore, India, to Denpasar. Indigo has recently started the direct flights but they are very expensive.

Flight ticket prices with a transit typically range from 20,000 to 50,000 Indian Rupees, offering a variety of choices to suit different budgets.

Australians have a direct flight between major cities and Denpasar. Flight tickets from Sydney to Denpasar on Jetstar is around AUD 450 one-way.

Accommodation

Bali’s stay expenses vary widely, catering to diverse budgetary preferences. Budget-conscious travellers can find lodging options starting from as low as INR 1,500 per night. These accommodations typically encompass cozy guesthouses or modest homestays, which offer basic amenities and a comfortable retreat for those seeking economical stays.

Alternatively, luxury-seekers can indulge in opulent experiences at upscale resorts, where nightly rates can soar to INR 15,000 or more. These properties boast lavish amenities, picturesque settings, and unparalleled hospitality, ensuring an indulgent escape amidst Bali’s tropical paradise.

Food

Bali’s culinary scene offers a delightful array of dining choices, from street food vendors to sophisticated, upscale restaurants. For budget-conscious travellers, street food stalls and warungs (local eateries) provide delicious meals at affordable prices, typically ranging from INR 100 to INR 300 per dish.

For a more refined dining experience, upscale restaurants and fine dining establishments offer a plethora of gastronomic delights, with the average meal costing between INR 400 and INR 800 per person.

Local Transportation

Various transportation options make exploring Bali’s scenic landscapes and vibrant streets convenient. Note that traffic in Bali is insane.

Renting a scooter offers flexibility and freedom to navigate the island at your own pace. Prices for scooter rentals typically range from INR 200 to INR 2,000 per day, depending on factors such as rental duration, scooter model, and negotiation skills.

You can use Grab bikes for affordable and faster rides. The ride usually cost within IDR 20,000 depending on the distance.

Alternatively, taxis or local transportation are another viable option for getting around Bali. Taxis provide a comfortable and hassle-free mode of transportation, with fares varying depending on the distance travelled and the driver’s negotiation. During my girls trip to Bali, we paid 500,000 Indonesian Rupiah per day (equivalent to approximately 3,000 INR) for taxi fares.

Activities

For each endeavour, engaging in various activities during our Bali adventure entailed costs ranging between 5,000 INR and 10,000 INR. These activities encompassed diverse experiences, including but not limited to guided tours, water sports, cultural excursions, and wellness retreats, offering ample opportunities for exploration and enjoyment amidst Bali’s captivating landscapes and vibrant culture.

How to Get to Bali?

By Air

The most convenient means of reaching Bali is by boarding a flight to the Ngurah Rai International Airport located in Denpasar, the capital city of Bali. Situated approximately 15 kilometres from Denpasar city, you can hire a taxi or utilise a public shuttle service to reach the city centre upon arrival at the airport. Ngurah Rai International Airport boasts connections to major cities worldwide.

Notably, there are not many direct flights from Bangalore to Denpasar; travellers typically have to transit through Kuala Lumpur or Singapore. Indigo has recently started direct flights between Bangalore and Denpasar but they are very expensive.

This resort is in Sanur and offers a convenient location amid many restaurants and cafes. The accommodations provided spacious and pristine rooms, and the staff extended warm and welcoming hospitality throughout our stay. Our experience at this charming resort was delightful, making our time in Bali all the more memorable.
  2. Green Bird Villa (Ubud) — During another visit, I opted for the Green Bird Villa. It offered a delightful and comfortable experience. The rooms were notably spacious and expansive, and the property featured villas with a captivating swimming pool and garden vistas. However, one minor drawback was the absence of an in-house restaurant facility.
  3. Ubud Inn and Cottages (Ubud) – Located next to Ubud Monkey Forest, Ubud Inn and Cottages is conveniently situated among restaurants and cafes. It offers luxurious suites ideal for a lavish holiday. This is surely one of the best properties I have stayed in.
